A fired up Towcestrians travelled away again this week to play in the shadow of the castle against a Windsor team, who sat just behind the League joint leaders in 3rd place, for what was going to be a tough test
In testing wet and windy conditions with the weather playing a huge part in limiting expansive rugby, Towcestrians started brightly but found little momentum from their pressure by infringing at key times, this allowed the home team to kick two penalties and gain an early 6 – 0 lead, Windsor fly half, Rhys Davies, had the chance to stretch the lead again but saw his third kick fail
Tows, needing to respond to this early setback, found their way back into the match with a Matt Yuill try followed by a James Falvey penalty and the Towcestrians came off at half time 6 – 8 ahead
Tows turned the screw up front in the second half and started to dominate the scrum, driving the Windsor pack backwards yards at a time, a second James Falvey penalty quickly followed by a Ronnie Speakman try, diving over from the base of another dominant scrum, converted by Falvey saw Tows extend their lead to 6 – 18
A series of punishing drives from the Tows pack saw Craig Holton, returning to the side after a long injury lay-off, crash over, Falvey, who kicked superbly in the muddy conditions, adding the extras
Tows were now hunting the Bonus Point try and it came from the Tows pack, Windsor, by now light on power after losing second row, George Jupp, through injury were pushed backwards at will and Referee Miller eventually lost patience with the home team after infringements, running under the sticks to award the penalty try to put Tows back on top of the league
After the game both Coach and Captain shared the same sentiments with Head Coach Robbie George saying “it was certainly a really demanding day weatherwise, the set piece was strong and we dominated the scrum, it was all about playing in the right area and we improved on our kicking game of recent weeks to do that” Skipper Zac Osborne could only apologise to his backs “we played the right rugby in the right areas and the boys put in a big shift up front, I feel sorry for the backs, it must have been freezing out there!”
Next week Towcestrians put it all on the line again as they host, now 3rd placed, Maidenhead who had their own setback after Tows previous week’s opponents, Oxford Harlequins, defeated them 3 – 8
