Tows produced a fantastic display of dominating running rugby to dismantle a Maidenhead team that on paper looked a tough proposition, both teams came into this game with a record of played 8 won 6, drawn 1, lost 1 with the Tows only ahead of third placed Maidenhead on Bonus Points gained, the visitors also boasted a miserly defence having conceded fewer points than the Towcestrians, but the Tows having scored far more
On a bitterly cold day in front of a packed Vice Presidents day crowd Tows started slowly, allowing Maidenhead plenty of early possession, probing the Tows defensive line and gaining some ground, eventually leading to a penalty kick from full back Davies to put the visitors ahead, playing with a strong wind behind them Maidenhead used a kicking game to try and gain territory, this gave much needed possession and time on the ball to the home side and Tows started to establish themselves and impose their running game on Maidenhead
Mid way through the first half Tows also started to gain the upper hand in the set piece and scored the games first try after using the ball well through several phases for Matt Yuill to cross over close to the corner, Tows would consider themselves disappointed at half time to only be 5 – 3 ahead having failed to convert some good opportunities
With the wind now at their backs Tows looked to dominate the second half and started well, disrupting a Maidenhead scrum , allowing Tows no.9 Murray Aitchison to latch on to the ball and scream over from 30 yards out, James Falvey adding the extras, Tows replacement back rower, Joe Threlfall, finished off some intense forward pressure for a try under the posts, again converted by Falvey and the Tows stretched away to a 19 -3 lead
Tows were now playing some great running rugby with the forwards dominating and the backs moving the ball well to create openings and should have added to the score line, failing to convert a 4 man overlap, but tries from James Falvey and Craig Holton kept the scoreboard moving, a Falvey penalty extended the lead to 34 points before Maidenhead latched onto turnover ball to score out wide, with returning Tows no.10 Scott Browne pulling the strings Tows continued to create space, wing forward Yuon Skelton crossing in the corner for Falvey to finish off the game converting from the Touchline.
After the game Tows Director of Rugby, Robbie George commented “Maidenhead were a tough outfit to break down and the first half reflected that, defensively our line speed was excellent and we played with a lot more tempo in the second half which caused the game to open up”
Towcestrians Attack Coach, Mark Yeates, was pleased with the performance “we asked questions of their defence and created a lot of opportunities off the quick ball we got which was great, we scored some good tries but should have had more given the opportunities we gave ourselves”
