Swindon blown away by nine try Tows

After last week's extremely disappointing performance at Newbury, Tows got back on track with a hugely impressive display at Greens Norton Road against the visiting Swindon RFC.

Tows powered in 9 tries in a display of running rugby that belied the difficult conditions and a wind so strong that it was equally difficult to play with it as it was against.

Playing with the howling wind at their backs Tows soon got on the scoreboard, Craig Holton crashing through attempted tackles to open and Holton quickly added a second, running off the back of the dominant Tows Scrum, James Falvey converting for Tows to lead 12 – 0

With the wind giving huge territorial advantage, Tows pinned the visitors in their own 22, Swindon defending bravely but eventually the line was breached by the impressive Pepe Nanci, Falvey again adding the extras, a nineteen point lead didn’t quite look enough in the gale but as the half drew to a close Tows crossed for two more tries, scrum half Murray Aitchison going blind side to score and James Falvey finishing after the ball was spread wide through the backs, his conversion giving Tows a 31 point lead to protect.

After soaking up 10 minutes of Swindon pressure, as they enjoyed the wind at their backs, it was Tows who broke downfield, and only foul play from Swindon in the form of a deliberate knock on, prevented another try, the Swindon player was sent for a 10 minute rest and a man to the good Tows took advantage, winger Matt Yuill creating space for Pepe Nanci to score his second.

Having to run everything against the wind, Tows showed great skill levels and handling in keeping the ball moving and broke out from their own 22, great work from Liam Wilkinson storming upfield linking with Jordan Brew who made good yards, leaving Scott Browne the simple task of dotting down under the sticks, Nanci returned Yuill’s earlier favour, and showed classic Jug avoidance, giving him the score when he was nearly over the line himself and Alex Chalcraft finished the rout, Falvey converting two of the final three scores

The visitors got themselves on the board, Tim Barry with no options, looked around and then swung a boot at the ball for an unlikely drop goal to finish, Tows 55 Swindon 3

Robbie George was delighted with his players “it was a great way to bounce back from last week, there has been a real attitude in training all week about wanting to put things right from that game, we looked a different outfit this week , our skill levels in those conditions were excellent and to score 24 points into that wind was very pleasing”

Still in second place, Tows are on their travels to the Somerset/Wilts borders to take on 11th placed Trowbridge this weekend, just 2 points behind league leaders Salisbury and seven clear of third placed Leighton Buzzard, who play each other.

Tows 2nd XV returned from Luton with a 5 – 69 merit table win while the 3rd XV narrowly lost at home to a very strong Bedford Athletic 2’s, Tows Colts gained revenge over Southam from earlier in the Season with a solid 29 -5 victory
