Towcestrians convincing home form continued, overcoming a powerful Broadstreet, the Coventry outfit relegated from National 2 last season, in a pulsating game where a home win looked highly unlikely after the opening 20 minutes.
Tows scrum came under intense scrutiny right from the start and a penalty from Broadstreet's fly-half, Lee Chapman, got the scoreboard ticking, a Yellow card for Tows wing forward, Nicky Blackham, added extra pressure to the pack's job and after repelling several 5 metre scrums, Tows conceded a try from further out, Scrum half, Thatcher, breaking strongly from the base to score, Chapman adding the extras to send the Away team out to a 0 - 10 lead
The Tows fightback started with Broadstreet's blind side taking a ten minute rest, Tows pack mauled upfield, followed by quick hands through the backs for Matt Yuill to cross out wide, Tows backs began to move the ball more confidently, stretching the visitors defence for Matt Bodily to go over for a try, with both scores unconverted the half finished at 10 -10
The second half began with the turnaround continuing, Tows centre, Pepe Nanci, waltzing in under the sticks, Yuill kicking the conversion, Tows relapsed into a series of errors putting pressure on themselves allowing the visitors back into the match, with Broadstreet pounding the Tows line wide out, Referee Matt Rozier, who had a fine game, ran under the posts for a penalty try, Yellow carding Tows winger Matt Bodily for offside in the process, the conversion levelling the scores 17 - 17.
With both sides desperate for the win, it was the Tows backs who again came up the goods, Yuill coming into the line to touch down to wild scenes of player celebration, much akin to that of a Premiership Football Match rather than a Rugby match, the drama was not over as in the dying seconds a cross kick from inside Broadstreets own 22 was collected wide out by their powerful centre Boxall, who, after evading the first tackle, seemed to have a clear run to the line, when Full-back Yuill, showed his class and covered back for a try and match saving tackle.
The win moves Tows up to 5th in the league with four wins and a draw from seven games, and next week face a very difficult away trip to Sandbach
Towcestrians 2nd XV collected a 44 - 7 win over Broadstreets 2nd's while the 3rd's overcame Kettering 2nd's 14 - 25, Tows 4th's failed to travel to Wellingboro, apologies all round.
