Having lost their last 4 league matches, a feeling that most of the current squad will not have experienced before, it was imperative that Tows came away from this match with the win, travelling to Syston who sat at the foot of the table but had picked up some good wins lately, this would undoubtedly be a targeted match for them as well.
An early penalty from James Falvey was immediately cancelled out by Syston, who went into the lead when their no.8 muscled his way over from a close range scrum, Tows anxiety to get into the game led to knock on's from frantic passes and with clear try scoring opportunities going begging they resorted to Falvey's boot to get them back in contention with a second penalty.
A penalty kick to the corner then had Syston on the back foot, their aggressive defence punished by the referee, kicking to the corner Tows looked to drive over and after two further penalties and line outs Zac Osborne was eventually driven over, Falvey adding the extras, Tows backs at last started to move the ball and Matt Bodily burst through the Syston defence to score under the posts, converted by Falvey, Tows led 10 - 20 at the break.
The stage looked set for the Tows, having regained some confidence, to run away with it, but it was the home side who came out fighting, taking the game to the Tows with their ball carriers, on the back foot the Tows then got on the wrong side of the referee and although Syston did not look like crossing the try line, two successful penalties allowed them to close the gap to just 4 points.
Tows habit of playing matches with a maximum of 14 men surfaced again, Peter Gowler shown a Yellow card after a number of team infringements and towards the end Matt Bodily was shown a contested red card, with backs to the wall Tows played out the last quarter, their pack driving Syston backwards to secure two further Falvey penalties and increase the gap back to 10, this was an ugly but necessary win for the Tows who have plenty to work on before next weeks home game against Longton, 2:15pm kick off
Robbie George commented after the match "with our recent run we were pleased to get the result although not satisfied with our performance, discipline continues to be a major issue and we have to put that right"
Tows 2nd XV also made the trip to Syston but were undone 15 -10 while Tows 3rd XV continue to impress with a 70 - 5 victory against Rushden & Higham
