Terrific Fightback give Tows much needed win!

Towcestrians produced a brilliant fightback to deliver a much needed win against a team who earlier in the season had convincingly defeated them.

Despite the game starting in brilliant sunshine, the overnight rain had left the pitch wet and heavy underfoot and conditions difficult, but both sides looked to play expansive rugby from the start and it was the visitors who gained the upper hand, after a few quick phases through the forwards in the Tows half they moved the ball out, the Halesonians 10 walked through Tows defensive effort and fed the right winger coming across to score in the opposite corner, neatly converted for a 0 - 7 lead.

It was Tows who looked to score next, moving the ball wide from a scrum, to winger Pepe Nanci, but the play was called back for a foot in touch, Tows continued to press the Hales line but were unable to cross and shortly after missing a kick-able penalty attempt went further behind when a midfield turnover presented quick ball and an overlap to the visitors, who took their chance and scored, unconverted to lead 0 - 12

Tows troubles seemed to have got worse when Chrissie George was binned for the Tows high penalty count, Hales looked to press home the advantage but were met by solid defence and the Tows got on the front foot with some busting runs from the forwards, Pete Gowler to the fore, only being kept out by some streetwise defending, eventually resulting in Halesonians going down to 14 men

Tows were forced into an early replacement when hard tackling centre Will Dunkley was injured, Dave Devlin-Jones coming on, Tows then made the break through, a Hales scrum was turned over and Gus Hopewell picked and broke down the blindside from just inside the Hales half, beating the cover defence, only to be pulled down illegally from behind by the collar just 2 metres short, the ref awarding the Penalty Try, Ben Roe converted and Tows were on the board at the stroke of half time, along with a second yellow card for the visitors.

With the pitch deteriorating in the 2nd half both teams defences were put to the test, but Tows gradually gained the upper hand in strength sapping conditions, with Tows forwards driving the tiring visitors back, Craig Holton finished a line out rumble to bring Tows level, errors began to creep in to both sides play but eventually Tows managed to find the winner, a loose kick from Hales was fielded by Matt Yuill who gained ground, Jamie Warr picking to get in behind and then quick ball out to Chrissie George who placed a cross field kick into the path of the flying Dave Devlin-Jones, getting a kind bounce, to cross wide out, coolly converted by Roe, with little time left Tows controlled the game and finished camped on the Hales line for a terrific comeback win.

Tows 2nd XV had an easier day against the visiting Halesonians 2nd's racking up a 76 - 0 win, and the Tows 3rd XV came back early from Rushden after injury to a home player halted their game while leading 0 - 14, Towcestrians Colts narrowly lost in the cup to Leighton Buzzard 7 - 12

Next week Tows take the long away trip to Bridgnorth in the League.
