Tows agonisingly close to first away win of season

Tows trip to Orpington in Kent to face fellow strugglers, Westcombe Park, came up agonisingly short, Ben Roe's last minute conversion from wide out just failing to clinch the game.

With both teams desperate for the win it was Tows who started the brighter, winger Alex Foggett crossing for Tows to go five points in front but with Tows lock Sam Sturley's return from injury cut short by a yellow card the home side took quick advantage kicking a penalty and then moving ahead with a breakout try under the posts after the ref awarded a Penalty try when Tows infringed on their own line. Sturleys return saw him make amends by scoring Tows second try, a converted wide out by Roe, the half ending with Tows for once spreading the ball quickly for Alex Chalcraft to dive over, Roe's conversion again successful.

Tows looked to be in control of the game, but stuttered in the second half and lost momentum, the home team took full advantage, a Tows missed touch finder was returned with interest for an unconverted Westcombe try, with a Chalcraft coming to nothing Westcombe elected to convert a penalty opportunity to bring them within a point of Tows and then scored the vital try which was converted to go 25 - 19 ahead with eight minutes left, Tows responded and battered the Westcombe line, several times going close under the posts, but repelled by the desperate home team, Tows try eventually coming wide out from industrious back rower Nathan Payne, Roe stepped up but could not repeat his last kick of the game conversion at Guildford and the kick pulled left of the posts, Tows pick up 2 losing bonus points but not what was needed after such a great effort.

Elsewhere around the club Tows 2nd XV continue to rack up victories this time dispatching Banbury 26 - 5, the Tows Colts impressed with a fantastic victory in the Semi-Final of the cup over Bedford Blues and the Tows 3rd XV, who were obviously glad to have a match after more than a month without a game, they took their frustrations out on an outclassed Old Northamptonians side racking up a 0 - 100 win, captain Matt Bodily having a field day with 4 tries, with Tom Hunt grabbing a hat trick.
