Tows clinch key win to leapfrog 'Boro

Tows clinch key win to leapfrog 'Boro

Crispin Slee4 Dec 2011 - 17:49

Towcester continued their winning League form with an impressive win over mid-table rivals Peterborough at Greens Norton Road.

Full back Matt Yuill was first on the scoreboard with a penalty after the hosts had repelled an early attack.

Tows’ pack slowly gained the upper hand with a series of drives which rocked Peterborough onto the back foot.

From a scrum on the visitors’ five metre line, scrum half Dave Stocks darted over for the hosts’ first try. Yuill converted.

Skipper Marc Yeates was next on the score sheet. As Tows’ pack surged forward, he ran off a maul and broke several tackles to touch down.

Yuill, restored to full back after a three week lay off through injury, added the extra points and Tows were sitting pretty up 17-0.

Just before half-time however, they were reduced to 14 men when Stocks was shown a yellow card and turned round to face the wind.

Opting to play close forwards game into the elements, Tows’ pack continued to rumble forward by picking and going.

They laid siege to the Peterborough line and after coming close several times, No 8 Chris Kirby finally breached the visitors’ defences to score.

Peterborough still looked dangerous however and were rewarded for their tenacity when their wing ran back a kick to score.

They then drove over from a line out for Mark Hodges to touch down to leave the scores standing at 22-10.

Playing in front of a vocal vice presidents crowd, Tows looked unlikely to come out second best.

Their forwards once again battered the Peterborough line and hooker Richard Tustian put the game to bend with Tows’ bonus point fourth try.

Tows leapfrog Peterborough as a result of the win and approaching the half way mark are looking one of the form sides in League with a 60 per cent win rate.

They make the journey to Matlock on Saturday to take on the side who are just above them in the table - a win would close the gap to a whisker.
