Tows tame Lions in comprehensive victory

Tows recent run of poor results brought extra attention to this game and with Lions just one place below Tows it had the look of a must win for the home side.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs Tows looked to play the ball into the corners and use the territory advantage, scoring soon into the half, a penalty kicked down to the corner and following line our drive saw Jack Wilson go over for the score, unconverted for 5 - 0 lead, Tows continued to dominate territory and only strong running from the Lions backs saw them occasionally break out of their own half and threaten, but as the half drew to a close a slender five point lead did not seem enough for Tows, it was then that Tows left winger Cam Young made his presence felt with two quick tries, Tows scrum-half Ben Barwell spreading the ball wide for Young to beat his man and go over, James Falvey adding the extras, and then Young was quick to latch on to a Lions dropped ball from the kick off to run in from half way for another seven pointer, despite Callum Jones yellow card Tows had the chance the extend the lead at the end of the half, Falvey unexpectedly missing a penalty close in.

With the wind straight into Tows faces it forced them to play with ball in hand and Rugby Lions failed to contain Tows pace, Jones, back on the field after his card went over after cleverly picking up from the base of a ruck to go through the middle and score from the 22, Lions responded with a try of their own after a Tows move broke down for them to go over under the posts, a Tows break from Falvey was stopped short of the line but a couple of quick phases allowed the busy Tom Threlfall to cross wide out, winger Sam Aitchison got in on the act with a quick brace in similar fashion as he outpaced the cover to score, Lions responded with a driving line out try but Ali Haynes stretched out to score Tows fifth of the half, James Falvey adding four second half conversions for a final score of 52 - 14

Tows head coach Chris Parr commented "It was great to see this performance and credit to the guys for playing like that in tough conditions, we deserved our tries and I thought our support play and ball carrying was excellent, but we won't be getting carried away, we have to back this up with positive performances over the next few weeks"

Elsewhere around the club Tows 2nd XV produced a gutsy display away at Nuneaton to sneak a 13 - 16 victory
