From the start Ilkeston’s monopoly of possession lead to their prop charging over for a converted try. Attempting to grab a foot hold in the game Tows lost centre David Williams for ten minutes for a High tackle. In the ten minutes in which Williams was carded the home team’s scrum half began to pull the strings and exploited this to the full by running in 15 points.
Tows then finally began to show their capabilities, running hard at the Ilks line, however somehow butchering the chance to score as they burst through with only the full back to beat.
The half time talk team seemed to work for Tows as gaining better ball, driving a penalty line out back for skipper Liam Wilkinson to score.
The hosts then came back again, scrum half Haigh breaking from a scrum to score and convert. This was followed by fullback Greg Taylor, one of three brothers in Ilks’ backs scoring wide out. This truly fixed the win for the home team as it was completely out of Tows’ reach at 34-5.
With the vocal home crowd bellowing out for more from their team it was Tows to their credit who finished the stronger side. Gus Hopewell being driven over the line from a quickly taken penalty and Matt Yuill scoring out wide to at least win the second half.
Next week Tows travel to Loughborough for the previously postponed fixture.
