A large crowd was expected to witness the game and a sense of anticipation was felt throughout all of those involved with Towcester as they look to go one step further than last year.
It was not the best start to the afternoon for Towcester as they lost experienced centre Mark Yeates in the warm up.
The match took time to get fired up as both sides tried to shake off the rust from the summer. Tows were the first to strike though as centre Will Dunkley broke through the Devizes line, he then found Eugene Baxter who was stopped short of the line only to pop the ball up to on coming hooker Fen Gallagher who finished off the move by crashing over the line. Falvey added the points.
Devizes then began to dominate possession and hammered away at the Tows defence resulting in a try for their fly half who then levelled the scores.
Tows’ luck worseded as they game progressed, losing their second centre of the day through injury. They then found themselves under all kinds of pressure, Devizes capitalized on this opportunity and went ahead.
In the dying embers of the half Tows became their own worst enemy as good field positions were quashed by conceding penalties or the butchering of chances. One Falvey penalty was all that they could come up with to make the score at the turn around 10 – 12.
Tows came out of the blocks for the second half as a new team and with a further penalty slotted by Falvey they were back in the lead. This was only to be halted by Towcester gifting their opposition a chance to take the lead back. The fly half however pulled the penalty wide.
Tows pack then began to dominate at the set piece and around the park, this was highlighted as replacement prop Joe Chambers crashed over.
Things only got worse for the visitors, poor discipline began to creep into the team as one of their players was yellow carded, only heaping on the pressure.
Tows pack used this as an opportunity to drive the opposition over and let scrum half Dave stocks easily dot down. Falvey added the extras and gave Tows an Ugly but welcome start to the season.
